The Ijen hike starts in the middle of the night, so where you sleep decides how much sleep you get. Pick the wrong base and your alarm goes off at eleven, you sit in a car for two hours and reach the crater rim already tired. Pick the right one and the night feels like part of the adventure rather than a punishment for it.

Why does your base matter so much?

The hiking gate at Paltuding opens at 2 am, and most people want to be walking soon after. You also need your printed or saved ticket, a health letter issued no more than three days before your visit and warm clothes, because the rim can be close to freezing. Every minute between your bed and the gate is a minute taken from your sleep.

What are the options?

Banyuwangi town: the easy choice

Most travellers stay in Banyuwangi, and for a first visit it is the right call. The town has the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses, proper restaurants, cash machines and pharmacies, and it is where the ferry from Bali and the train from Surabaya arrive. From town it is about an hour and a quarter by car to Paltuding, so you leave around midnight.

The trade off is the shortest night of the three, and the warm, humid air of the coast. If you arrive from Bali the same day, it is still the most comfortable option, and our guide to Banyuwangi has the rest of the town's reasons to stay a night or two.

Licin and the Ijen foothills: a shorter night

On the road up from town, the villages around Licin sit roughly halfway to Paltuding. Here you find small homestays, some run by families who once worked in the sulphur mine, and the air is already cooler. You can leave an hour later than you would from town, and spend the afternoon in the Osing village of Kemiren or among the clay dancers of Taman Gandrung Terakota, both on the same road.

The price of the extra sleep is choice and convenience. There are fewer places to eat in the evening, the roads are steep, and you will need a driver or your own transport to reach the trailhead.

The Ijen plateau: cool air, coffee and quiet

On the far side of the volcano, in Bondowoso regency, the plateau villages around Sempol sit among coffee plantations, close to Paltuding from the west. The nights are cold and the mornings clear, and the green savanna of Kawah Wurung is about ten kilometres from the trailhead.

This is a base for slow travellers who want to combine Ijen with the plateau itself. It is remote, the choice of rooms is small, and it is a long drive from the ferry port, so it suits people coming from Bondowoso or with a car and a few days to spare.

Paltuding itself

Paltuding is the trailhead: a car park with warungs selling hot drinks and noodles, a health post that issues the health letter and a homestay or two. There has long been a campground here as well, but check that it is open before you plan around it. The park does not allow anyone to stay overnight within 500 metres of the crater, and Paltuding is well outside that zone, about three kilometres away by trail. Sleeping here gives you the longest night and the coldest one.

What should you check before you book?

  • Transport at midnight. Ask whether the place can arrange a driver to Paltuding and back, and for how much.
  • The health letter. Ask whether they can help you get one, or plan to get it at the Paltuding health post.
  • Hot water and blankets. In the hills they matter more than a pool.
  • A flexible booking. Ijen tickets cannot be moved or refunded, and the park closes on the first Friday of every month and sometimes at short notice, so keep your room as flexible as your plans.
